Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) Surgery

Dr. Schwach performs this advanced orthopedic procedure for correction of stifle (knee) instability secondary to a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This surgical technique is superior to alternative methods previously used for this disorder in that it allows for a more rapid recovery for the patient, lessens the potential for arthritis development, and results in return to normal function and activity. Dr. Schwach received special training from, and is certified by, the company who patented the procedure (Slocum Enterprises, Inc.). He has performed over 500 successful TPLO surgeries.

Cruciate ligament injuries are common, and can be seen in any age or breed of dog. If your dog has experienced a rear leg lameness that has not resolved with rest, the knee joint should be evaluated. Physical exam and radiographs (x-rays) of the knee are required to make the diagnosis of a ruptured cruciate ligament. Sedation may be required for proper orthopedic evaluation.
